Day trips from Paris — Fontainebleau

Fontainebleau from Paris — the château, the forest, Barbizon

Eight centuries of French kings under one roof, an hour from Paris — and far fewer visitors than Versailles. I collect you at your hotel, we spend the morning in the château, then the forest or the painters' village of Barbizon in the afternoon. Open all year, and at its best in autumn.

A day in Fontainebleau, the way I usually plan it

A typical outline — every detail is adjusted with you before departure. The château opens at 9:30; being there at opening means the Grands Appartements almost to yourselves.

8:30
Pick-up at your hotel

Water, chargers and WiFi on board. We leave Paris by the A6 and are in Fontainebleau in about an hour.

9:30
The Château de Fontainebleau

The Grands Appartements, the Galerie François I, Napoleon's throne room and the apartment where he signed his abdication, the chapel. Allow two to two and a half hours. I can arrange a private guide through our concierge service.

12:15
Lunch in town or in Barbizon

A table reserved in the old town of Fontainebleau, or ten minutes away in Barbizon, the village where Millet and Rousseau painted — quieter, and the better choice on a fine day.

14:00
Barbizon and the forest

The Grande Rue of Barbizon with its painters' studios, then a walk among the sandstone boulders of the Gorges d'Apremont or the Rochers du Cuvier — an easy loop, or a longer one if you like.

16:00
Return to Paris

Back at your hotel in the late afternoon. Half-day guests head back straight after the château, around 1 pm.

Fontainebleau — your questions

How far is Fontainebleau from Paris by car?

About 65 km — roughly one hour door to door from central Paris, traffic permitting. Leaving before 9 am avoids the morning exit traffic on the A6.

Fontainebleau or Versailles?

Versailles is grander and busier; Fontainebleau is more intimate, more varied (eight centuries of kings, from François I to Napoleon III) and far less crowded. If you have already seen Versailles, or prefer a calmer day, Fontainebleau is the one. Both can be combined in a long day.

When is the Château de Fontainebleau open?

All year except Tuesdays, 1 January, 1 May and 25 December. It opens at 9:30. I will confirm opening hours for your travel date.

Is Fontainebleau suitable for a half-day?

Yes: the château alone takes two to two and a half hours, plus about an hour each way — around five hours in total. A full day lets you add lunch in Barbizon and a walk in the forest.

Can we combine Fontainebleau with Vaux-le-Vicomte?

Yes, and it works very well: Fontainebleau in the morning, Vaux-le-Vicomte — the château that inspired Versailles — in the afternoon, twenty minutes away. Vaux-le-Vicomte is seasonal; I will check the dates for you.

How much does a private day trip to Fontainebleau cost?

There is no price grid: every proposal is written for your date, your group size and your programme. You receive a written, all-inclusive quote within 2 hours — vehicle, chauffeur, fuel, tolls and waiting time included.

Shall I plan your day in Fontainebleau?

Tell me your date and what you would like to see. I will come back to you with a written proposal within 2 hours.
